TRANSFORMING INTERACTIVE ART WITH DIRECTIONAL SOUND

STUDIO IREGULAR

Studio Iregular

Montreal-based digital art studio Iregular has been at the forefront of interactive and immersive experiences since 2010. Their work spans audiovisual installations, large-scale sculptures, architectural projections, and scenographies, blending art and technology through geometry, light, sound, mathematics, AI, and machine learning. Central to their approach is the idea that interaction between the audience and the piece completes the artwork, making each experience unique.

In 2024, Iregular integrated Holosonics’ Audio Spotlight technology into two of their most ambitious exhibitions: NEST and Voices in Your Head. These installations explored sound in new ways, creating immersive, personalized audio experiences while maintaining a precise and controlled sonic environment.

NEST: A Sound-Focused Digital Artwork

Exhibited at Elektra Gallery (Montreal, CA) and SXSW (Austin, TX), NEST redefined how audiences engage with interactive art. Inspired by the natural defense mechanisms of insect colonies, the modular installation responded to human presence with evolving soundscapes.

Iregular employed Audio Spotlight AS-24ix models to create sound bubbles that followed individual participants. This innovation allowed visitors to experience unique, spatially tailored audio while preventing sound from bleeding into adjacent areas.

Voices in Your Head:
Exploring Interaction in Digital Art

Premiering at Village Numérique – MUTEK (Montreal, CA), Voices in Your Head was a linear immersive experience spanning four chapters: randomness, humans, metaphors, and long-term impact. Designed to examine human interaction with digital art, this exhibition leveraged multiple cutting-edge audiovisual technologies, including Holosonics’ Audio Spotlight.

By incorporating focused sound, Iregular created an experience where sound seemed to whisper directly into participants’ ears, reinforcing the exhibit’s theme of intuitive, instruction-free interaction. The technology enabled visitors to hear different narratives based on their movements, making each journey through the exhibit truly unique.

“We wanted to create sound bubbles where visitors experience personalized audio that moves with them. Holosonics’ Audio Spotlight allowed us to control sound placement with incredible precision—solving challenges of noise pollution while enabling deeper immersion.”
